Day 1 - Travel to Virginia Beach for a three night stay at a modern oceanfront hotel - on the boardwalk. Dinner tonight at a nice local restaurant.
Day 2 - Norfolk Naval Tour. Start with the Naval Air Station Norfolk, home to the 100-ship Atlantic Fleet, and the world’s largest naval installation. See aircraft carriers, destroyers, submarines and a collection of period homes. Then, off to downtown Norfolk to board the USS Wisconsin, berthed at Nauticus, the National Maritime Center. This is the last and largest battleship built by the U.S. Navy – discover how it earned five battle stars during World War II.
Follow up with a visit to the MacArthur Memorial, final resting place of Five Star General Douglas MacArthur, and home to artifacts and archives of his life. Enjoy an afternoon cruise on the 135 foot schooner the American Rover. This tall masted ship sails past the U.S. Fleet. Next you have a couple of hours to enjoy Norfolk's Waterside. This festive marketplace is filled with shops and restaurants, something for everyone. Dinner is on your own.
Tonight you experience the music, majesty, and might of the 15th Annual Virginia International Tattoo. Watch a cast of performers from six countries in a centuries old Scottish tradition with a 21st century American soul. Each year's Tattoo is different, with new performers from across the globe, new themes of honor and patriotism, and state of the art technical effects which will leave you breathless. What never changes – the spectacle of the massed pipes and drums, a profound sense of pride in country and an awe-inspiring finale.
Day 3 - Chincoteague Island Eco Tour. This morning we drive north from Virginia Beach and cross the 17 mile Chesapeake Bay Bridge Tunnel. This is a truly fascinating piece of engineering - it has both bridges over the Bay and tunnels that go under. Once across we head for Chincoteague Island and a Wild Pony Nature Cruise. You will enjoy viewing and photographing the ponies, birds, wildlife and sea life on and around the Islands. In addition to the ponies you might see dolphin and bald eagles.
Next there will be a lunch break with a time to visit the island shops. Then we spend a couple of hours at the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge. Beginning with a video in the Visitors Center and then a guided Birding Tour and Wetland Tour for your entire group. Dinner at the Lynnhaven Fish House in Virginia Beach.
Day 4 - Depart for home.
